Team runs for good cause (Surf Coast Times)

In March 2018, this wonderful human being, personal trainer Robert Pisto, approached the Sanfilippo Children's Foundation keen to nominate our charity for his upcoming SUP (Stand Up Paddle) challenge. Together with Fox Sports presenter Adam Peacock and former Wallaby rugby union player Mark Gerrard, Rob and seven others paddled 23 kms along Sydney's waterways from Manly to Rhodes. Along the way, he raised $12,000 for medical research and raised immeasurable awareness for our cause and the Hope for Isla and Jude campaign.

Why the Sanfilippo cause?

Myself and members of Fit State of Mind look to help an individual/family on the northern beaches each year and when I came across the story of Isla & Jude I was immediately drawn in and wanted to help, especially being a new dad. Last year the challenge was to run along all the beaches from Palm Beach to Shelly to raise money to purchase a communication device for a little girl with Rett Syndrome.

What's your day job?

I’m a personal trainer who loves to help others.

What fundraising experience did you have?

As previously mentioned, each year I try to find a cause I can help raise awareness and funds for. I was also involved in the World's Greatest Shave for many years.

What was the biggest challenge in your fundraising journey?

The biggest challenge would be getting people engaged and learning about the fundraiser and foundation, especially if it’s something they haven’t heard of before.

What was the biggest challenge in your paddle challenge?

Definitely the wind for the last 7kms. It certainly made it a challenge! We departed from Manly at 6.40am, everyone pumped and ready for the challenge ahead! We watched a spectacular, beautiful sunrise coming through the heads and over the next 10kms enjoyed conditions which were ideal for paddling, minimal swell, minimal boat chop and a light wind behind our backs.

Once we got about 1km past the Harbour Bridge however (still 10kms to go) we had strong head winds in front of us and even gusts of up to 44kms per hour. Now it became a real challenge but one we were all up for. Kneeling, lying down at times but never going to give up! Thinking of Isla and Jude helped us reach the finishing line 23kms and five hours and 15 minutes later!
